The walk-in camera

Tuesday was a good day: the latest issue of National Geographic dropped through my letterbox, which always means I’ll be spending the evening immersed in their superb photographs and articles.

This month a piece titled Rooms With a View features photographer Abelardo Morell really captured my imagination. He has been taking photographs I can only describe as a clever mix between landscape and interior using camera obscura. Abelardo, like many earlier photographers, projects the view from the window of a darkened room back inside and onto the walls. Uniquely he then photographs the resulting scene from inside this camera obscura, creating a stunning trompe l’oeil.

After reading the article I couldn’t help but blackout my dining room and see what I could capture. Above is my best shot so far, I feel like a kid discovering how a camera works all over again!

Photo Walk with Trey Ratcliff

TJZ-londonphotowalk_HDR3

On Friday I tagged along for a photo walk that Trey Ratcliff, famed HDR and travel photographer, was leading though central London before his weekend workshop. I thought it would be a good opportunity to take some photos and meet some photographers.

There ended up being about 50 people hanging around The National Theatre when I got there around 6, I had no idea the amount of people Trey could pull from his blog post and a few twitter messages. Trey obviously is a very successful and has build a brand on teaching HDR as well as loads of general photography and gear tips. Everyone I talked to found out about the walk through either his blog, facebook or twitter; a few guys walked up only having found out about it on the way home from work checking twitter and then joined in with their camera phones. Trey really showed me the power of the social media for a small business.

It was a great experience and I would encourage you to join in on a walk if you have the chance. Despite my normal aversion to HDR I did actually take some bracketed exposures and am quite happy with the results. It is always great to try new things, thanks Trey for the impetus to get out shooting this weekend.

There are more photos from the walk on my flickr page
and the rest of the group are adding them to this group
