Wunjos is the most well rounded shop on Denmark street; they have a great selection of electric and acoustic guitars from Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Rickenbacker, Martin and Guild. Not missing many big names at all. Everyone is always friendly and know their stuff when you ask a hard question.

My favourite part of the shop is the the acoustic room (below) in the back which is filled with lovely instruments and can be much quieter than the main room.

Rockers is one of my favourite shops in Denmark Street, they have loads of high-gain gear and they were also the only place with a Jim Root Telecaster which is the reason Jarrad and I had made the journey into town.

When I was back home in Colorado visiting friends and family in February I took the opportunity to visit one of the independent guitar shops. This is the Olde Town Pickin’ Parlor in Olde Town Arvada. It is a gem of a shop with lovely relaxed and open vibe you would be hard pressed to find back in London. The instruments they have on the wall are absolutely beautiful, well worth popping in for a browse if you play or not.

Tuesday was a good day: the latest issue of National Geographic dropped through my letterbox, which always means I’ll be spending the evening immersed in their superb photographs and articles.

This month a piece titled Rooms With a View features photographer Abelardo Morell really captured my imagination. He has been taking photographs I can only describe as a clever mix between landscape and interior using camera obscura. Abelardo, like many earlier photographers, projects the view from the window of a darkened room back inside and onto the walls. Uniquely he then photographs the resulting scene from inside this camera obscura, creating a stunning trompe l’oeil.

After reading the article I couldn’t help but blackout my dining room and see what I could capture. Above is my best shot so far, I feel like a kid discovering how a camera works all over again!

My wife and I have had a few photos printed this month as Christmas gifts and I thought I would post our experiences as well as keep track of the print types we prefer in a series.

My wife took the photo (above) while in Copenhagen with a good friend, who the gift is for. We love giving photos as gifts because you are really giving a feeling or memory especially if it is a moment you shared like this one is. She chose it because it worked well in black and white as well as a square crop.

I have had a few small things printed at The Print Space in Shoreditch and have been very happy with the results, so we took a look at their Giclee prints which we thought would really suit the photo.

We ended up picking Hahnemühle Photo Rag. The Print Space describe it this way:

At 308g.s.m. this is a heavy art paper, with a fibrous finish. The paper softens the image and mutes the colours giving a watercolour feel to the final image.

Photorag is perfect for a high quality black and white print; it has deep blacks and whites while preserving subtlety in the mid-tones. We discovered detail in the birds’ wings we didn’t actually notice on the monitor, but stands out beautifully in the print.

The texture and weight of the paper work really well with the grain in this type of photo. I would be very interested to try printing some color images on this paper.

After ordering online we had our prints within three days packed very well in plastic, tissue paper and a poster tube. I would definitely recommend The Print Space for the service as well as quality.

Gear Used:
Canon 20D w/ Canon 50mm 1.8
1/1600th F11 (iso 1600)
Edited in Lightroom and Photoshop
Detail photos taken with iPhone 3Gs

*If you are prepping images for print take a look at the tutorial videos The Print Space have put together; we wouldn’t have had such great results without prepping correctly.

Update: David Clapp has just published a great review on his blog about more services the Print Space offer

Jhonny Roadhouse Music- Manchester

I had just enough time to head over to Jhonny Roadhouse Music before heading home and I am really glad I did.

Jhonny Roadhouse is owned and run by the same family that started over fifty years ago by Jhonny “The Sax” Roadhouse which makes it a great place to go for advice as well as some new gear. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from a shop that has been around as long as Jhonny’s. You never know what amazing instrument you will find in a dusty corner!

They have a great selection of guitars mostly staying away from the main guys like Fender and Gibson but where JRM really shines is upstairs in the oldest section of the shop. This floor is packed with folk instruments and the best selection of brass and woodwind in Manchester! (I didn’t have a chance to take any photos upstairs unfortunately)

Gear used:
Canon EOS Rebel G and Sigma 50mm EX 1.4
loaded with Fuji Velvia 50
scanned with Canon Canoscan 4400F

Everyone is very friendly inside this super clean shop, there were not to many customers about on a Monday afternoon but you can imagine it packed on the weekends. They have a huge range of Fender, Gibson and Epiphone electric’s along the back wall which is quite impressive; though its a bit desensitising seeing so many amazing instruments at once.
By far the best thing about Dawsons is their demo area which is a glass cube that you can take an amp and guitar into to have a play before you buy. Its great for anyone who doesn’t like to play in front of strangers or wants to really hear what is going on with their new rig.

If I had another evening in town I would have shot the building properly in the dark because they keep the lights on and your eye is instantly drawn to the hundreds of guitars hanging on the upper floor…well mine is anyway.

There is something about the atmosphere of a rough, cramped shop like this that makes them so appealing to me. It must be the collector mentality like a DJ looking for rare vinyl every week in the same bins. (which they are not short of in Manchester either) You just never know what amazing guitar they will have up on the wall.

Chase Music on Oldham Street is no different; they pride themselves on having the best deals in town. (which is no mean feat being a five minute walk from Dawson’s)

What they do is buy in bulk and pass the savings onto the customers; the result is a shop packed with affordable instruments and you have just enough room to walk up and down the shops length.

I have decided to visit as many independent guitar shops as I can and take some photos along the way as a journal of sorts. Watch this space for updates.
